Most homeowners know what a circuit breaker does: it trips when a circuit draws too much current. But the role of AFCI breakers in modern electrical panels goes further than that. An arc fault circuit interrupter AFCI stops a different kind of hazard, one that a standard breaker will never catch.

What AFCI Breakers Do — and Why Standard Breakers Fall Short

An AFCI breaker is designed to detect dangerous arcing inside your home’s wiring. Arcing happens when electricity jumps across a gap or travels through damaged insulation. It produces intense heat inside walls, often without tripping a standard circuit breaker at all.

A standard breaker watches for overloads and short circuits. It trips when current exceeds a set threshold. Arc faults, however, can occur at normal current levels. The wire looks fine to a standard breaker, but the arc is already smoldering behind your drywall.

AFCI breakers work differently. They analyze electrical waveforms in real time and look for the specific arcing patterns that signal a dangerous condition. When they find one, they cut power to that circuit immediately.

The difference between AFCI and GFCI protection

These two devices often come up together, but they protect against different hazards:

  • AFCI breakers protect against electrical fires caused by arc faults in branch circuits and wiring.
  • GFCI outlets protect against electrical shock by detecting ground fault current leaks to water or a person.

Required locations include:

  • Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and family rooms
  • Kitchens, laundry areas, and finished basements
  • Hallways longer than 10 feet, closets, and stairways
  • Sunrooms, recreation rooms, libraries, and dens

Two areas do not require AFCI protection: bathrooms and garages. GFCI protection covers those spaces instead, since moisture and shock risk are the primary concern there, not arc faults.

California has adopted the 2022 California Electrical Code, which aligns closely with the 2020 NEC. Most Orange County jurisdictions enforce these requirements on all new construction and on any circuit that is extended or modified during a renovation.

What happens when you renovate without updating to AFCI

This is a common problem in older Orange County homes. A homeowner adds an outlet in a bedroom or extends a circuit into a remodeled kitchen. Under current code, that extended circuit must be AFCI protected. Skipping that step can fail an inspection, void a homeowner’s insurance claim after a fire, or create liability when the home is sold.

If your electrical panel was installed before 2000, it almost certainly has no AFCI protection at all. A licensed electrician can inspect the panel and tell you exactly which circuits need upgrading.

Most electrical panels installed before 2000 were never designed to hold AFCI breakers. They may not have space for them, or the breaker slots may be incompatible with modern AFCI devices.

A panel upgrade solves both problems at once. A new panel provides the correct slots, the right capacity, and space for AFCI breakers on every required circuit. Combining the two jobs also costs less than scheduling them separately.

Where should you not use AFCI breakers?

AFCI breakers are not required in bathrooms, garages, or on dedicated appliance circuits for items like refrigerators, ovens, and air conditioners. These areas either require GFCI protection instead, or use heavy-duty wiring that is less prone to the arc faults AFCI devices are designed to detect. Low-voltage circuits under 30 volts, such as doorbells and security systems, are also exempt.

Does a refrigerator have to be on an AFCI breaker?

Under the 2023 National Electrical Code, a refrigerator circuit in a kitchen does require AFCI protection because kitchens are now covered under NEC 210.12. However, a dedicated refrigerator circuit was exempt under older NEC editions. If your home was wired before the 2020 NEC was adopted locally, the requirement may not apply unless you extend or modify that circuit during a renovation.

Will a microwave trip an AFCI breaker?

A microwave can trip an AFCI breaker, but it is usually a sign of a wiring problem rather than a faulty breaker. Microwaves draw high current on startup, which can stress loose connections and create brief arcing. The AFCI breaker detects those arcing patterns and shuts the circuit off. If your microwave repeatedly trips an AFCI breaker, have a licensed electrician inspect the outlet, the wiring, and the connections at the panel.
